“We have damaged each other plenty.”
Thor lowers his hammer without even thinking about it. He does not want this. He tired, and it’s not just physical, it’s not just his bones and muscle screaming at him. It’s not just the blood and soot caked to his skin. But every swing of Mjölnir towards Loki makes him feel like he’s being pierced through the heart. He doesn’t want to fight anymore. There’s a moment where Loki looks confused at the action, because doesn’t Thor realize he means to kill him? But it’s only a moment.
“What is the matter, brother,” Loki says. “Can’t bring yourself to strike me down?”
He brings the scepter up until it’s set at Thor’s throat, threatening to slice him open. Thor grabs the curved edge of it, squeezing, feeling the blood run hot from his palm. It slides down the scepter and drips onto the rooftop.
“Enough, brother.”
Loki’s hand shakes, teeth bared. He could end it, right here and now, with the flick of his wrist. But his hesitation only hurts more, makes Thor’s gut twist and his eyes water.
“We have damaged each other plenty,” he says. “No more.”
The way Loki’s eyes darken, Thor knows he hasn’t heard him. The way Loki’s eyes darken, Thor knows that his brother is lost.
“I’ve not even begun,” Loki says, voice low and dangerous.
Blood drips between them.
“When I am finished,” Loki says, twisting the scepter so it scrapes Thor’s neck, threatening, “you will be beyond damaged.”
Thor shuts his eyes.
“Brother,” he says. “I already am.”
